The Effect of It All: A Response to Quaz Degraft’s ‘In the Black’

By Danielle C Moore and Terrence Coles

In response to Quaz Degraft’s renowned play, In The Black, this engaging and interactive workshop will explore the psychological effects of the endless pressures associated with conforming to societal norms and constructs. Mental Health and Community advocates, Terrance Coles, Certified Peer Support Specialist, and Danielle C Moore, MSRC, CRC, LCMHC, will examine and dissect the effects of both corporate structures and penal institutions on the male psyche.

The session will feature an engaging panel discussion among community advocates, mental health professionals, corporate executives, and law enforcement on the misidentification of black men navigating unfamiliar territory. The second hour of the session will include two audience interactive activities that highlight how the black male’s acceptance of standard “rules of engagement” often challenges morality and opposes cultural and personal value systems.
