Line Dancing: A Bridge Across Time & Space II
By Tariq Karriem
This workshop explores the historical and contemporary significance of line dancing within the African diaspora. We delve into the rich tapestry of line dances originating from diverse communities across the globe, from the vibrant rhythms of West Africa to the soulful movements of the Caribbean and the energetic steps of the American South.
Participants will engage in a series of interactive line dances, experiencing firsthand the power of shared movement to foster community and connection. We will discuss the historical context of these dances, examining how they have served as vehicles for cultural preservation, social resistance, and joyful expression throughout the diaspora.
This workshop aims to illuminate the enduring legacy of line dancing as a powerful tool for building bridges across generations, cultures, and communities, while promoting physical and emotional well-being.
