Mbongeni Ngeme Memorial Lecture

By Nhlanhla Ngema, Tiisetso Ngema, and Palesa Mazamisa

This memorial lecture-workshop honors the legacy of Mbongeni Ngeme, the acclaimed South African theatre-maker behind Woza Albert!, Asinamali!, and Sarafina!. Led by Nhlanhla Ngema, participants will engage with key elements that defined his work, including the integration of indigenous performance traditions, ensemble-driven storytelling, and theatre as a vehicle for social consciousness and historical preservation. Through curated excerpts, reflective dialogue, and interactive exercises, attendees will gain insight into how Ngeme crafted globally resonant narratives from deeply local experiences.

Rooted in African performance traditions and social consciousness, the session examines how Ngeme’s work continues to inspire theatre-makers across the African diaspora and beyond.
