We Are, Because We Were (Screening III)
“Creating a space for people to see how important history is, not only in terms of photographing ourselves and our families and our events, but our oral history”
—Hilda Willis
Directed by Rodney Wilds
We Are, Because We Were offers a glimpse into the ever-growing branches of African American history in Winston-Salem. With the guidance of the Winston-Salem African American Archives, a treasured collection of historical material, this film strives to shed light on almost two centuries of history. This piece focuses on a history that has either been forgotten, or worse, never been told.
It explores Winston-Salem’s African American history through the lenses of business, healthcare, communication, transportation, and includes testimonies from some of the city’s most renowned voices. This journey takes place inside the Winston-Salem African American archive itself, curated by its protectors Lester Davis and Billy Rich. Both Lester and Billy have dedicated years to literally and figuratively preserving the archive and the countless stories held within. They now seek to engage with a broader community to participate in this shared history and continue its preservation. (Documentary, 39 minutes)
We Are, Because We Were is presented in partnership with Riverrun International Film Festival.
